What Sunflowers Know About Loving God and Loving People
I want to be a sunflower. I’ve always loved them. Ever since I was a kid and watched the film, A Far Off Place and saw that these flowers can be bigger than people! Plus they just look so happy all the time! Maybe it’s because they know something people often forget. Thomas Bulfinch said that, “The sunflower is a favorite emblem of constancy.” So, what does it take to be a Helianthus annuus? (Other than having a completely different genotype.) It takes direction. It takes a faithful pursuit of light. Truly. Many of you know that this blossom faces the sun. That’s the life of a sunflower. Photosynthesis and following the light. And when that bright ball of yellow burning gas is not to be seen, they face each other. What a beautiful picture of how life should be done. To Love God with all your heart, your soul and your mind. And then, to love your neighbor as yourself. So, I’ll be a sunflower: loving God more than life itself because He is Life. And I’ll love people.
I want to share some things that express that love, just like this yellow bloom spreads happiness. For those of you reading this, I hope you can see me face the Son and know that I’ll face you too.
